Jacob Lawrence was born September 7, 1917. He is best known for portraying African American experiences through a style of art that he referred to as “dynamic cubism”, a technique in which he juxtaposed bright colors next to varying hues of brown and black. He became a national icon due to “The Migration Series” which consisted of 60 panels portraying Blacks moving to the North from southern states from 1910 to 1970. Lawrence was also a professor at the University of Washington.
